Course Description

In this course, learners will gain knowledge of adult learning theories, how adults learn, and what motivates and engages them to be active participants in their own learning. Learners will investigate research related to the foundational theories of andragogy and self-directed, transformative, and experiential learning. Emphasis is placed on the application of adult learning principles to create learning experiences in the workplace and/or adult education setting. Additionally, learners will examine the factors which influence adult learning and what it means to be an adult learner practitioner. 

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Examine the history of adult learning and andragogy.
  • Evaluate the impact of federal mandates on adult education and training.
  • Compare andragogical and pedagogical theories.
  • Analyze current trends and developments in the field of adult education and training.

Week 2

  • Evaluate key adult learning theories.
  • Analyze the fundamental principles of adult learning.
  • Compare traditional and non-traditional instructional models.

Week 3

  • Evaluate the impact of learning styles on adult learning.
  • Analyze the adult learning process and experience.
  • Determine the relationship between transformative learning and adult education.
  • Compare the models of experiential learning.

Week 4

  • Examine the biological and psychological development of adult learners.
  • Evaluate the influences of sociocultural perspectives on learning development.
  • Determine cognitive development in adulthood.
  • Analyze multiple intelligences in adult learners.

Week 5

  • Evaluate the purposes of adult education and training
  • Compare the types of providers for adult education and training.
  • Differentiate strategies for promoting critical thinking skills in adult education.
  • Examine motivation strategies for adult learners.

Week 6

  • Assess formal and informal adult education and training settings.
  • Evaluate the implications of learning in the digital age.
  • Determine the most common challenges in an adult education setting or training environment.
  • Examine the effect of cultural diversity on the adult learning environment.
