CJS/211 - Ethics in Criminal Justice
Course Description
This course explores the standards and codes of professional responsibility in criminal justice professions. It also explores ethical dilemmas, professional organizations and agencies, ethics and community relations, ethics in criminal justice laws and procedures, and civil responsibility in law enforcement and correctional environments.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Describe the components of the criminal justice system.
- Explain the importance of ethics in the criminal justice field.
- Discuss common ethical perspectives and styles.
Week 2
- Describe the role of ethics in law enforcement.
- Identify ethical issues involved in police procedures, use of force, and investigations.
- Discuss methods to reduce corruption and unethical policing procedures.
Week 3
- Describe the role of ethics in the court system.
- Identify ethical issues in court procedures.
- Compare judicial and ethical responsibilities of the defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge.
Week 4
- Describe the role of ethics in corrections.
- Identify ethical issues involved in correctional procedures.
- Discuss the code of ethical behavior for probation, parole, and corrections officers.
Week 5
- Describe the role of ethics in criminal justice policy making.
- Explain the relationship between ethics and the enforcement of laws.
- Discuss ethical considerations for the war on terrorism.
- Discuss ethical considerations for the future of the criminal justice system.
Notes
A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
