COM/520 - Organizational Communication for Adult Education and Training
Course Description
In this course, learners will apply effective written and oral communication principles to the role of adult educator and trainer in the workplace environments of today. Learners will examine the influence of perception, organizational change, and technology tools on the creation of professional communication. In addition, learners will demonstrate how to create communication appropriate to the audience and the communication channel, including digital, social media, and mobile platforms. The course also addresses interpersonal and intercultural communication in corporate, educational, and global settings.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Evaluate the role of effective communication in an organization.
- Compare internal and external target audiences in organizational communication.
- Analyze the role of communication in preparing learners for the global workplace.
- Examine the role of perception and justification in business communication.
Week 2
- Examine team dynamics and best practices for communication and collaboration.
- Compare appropriate nonverbal communication and effective listening skills for organizational communication.
- Determine diversity and multicultural challenges that may impact effective communication.
- Assess the importance of developing cultural competency when communicating in diverse environments.
Week 3
- Compare audience-centered message creation and language choice.
- Design an effective messaging strategy based on an audience-centered approach.
- Generate effective content and style in organizational communication.
- Determine the impact of social media on organization communication.
Week 4
- Compose effective informational and persuasive messages.
- Design ways to successfully convey controversial or sensitive information.
- Apply appropriate writing processes to organizational communication.
Week 5
- Examine the processes for planning and writing reports and proposals.
- Determine effective presentation skills.
- Evaluate electronic media and technology available for teaching and training.
- Demonstrate presentation and technology skills.
Week 6
- Determine ethical issues in the field of adult education and training.
- Evaluate personal codes of ethics in organizational communication.
- Assess the importance of maintaining ethical practices in the organizational communication process.
- Examine current trends and professional organizations in the adult education and training field.
