Course Description

Learners focus on developing the skills necessary to become effective assessors of adult learners in corporate training and in other adult education learning environments. Learners examine the fundamentals of planning, implementing, and analyzing assessments to improve instruction and learning. Additionally, learners explore purposes and methods of evaluation for courses, programs, and training.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Arkansas and Kentucky.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Define assessment and how it is used in learning environments.
  • Differentiate between three types of assessments used to measure student learning.
  • Explain why the steps of the assessment process are necessary to drive instruction in an organization.

Week 2

  • Explore the purposes of assessment in adult education.
  • Analyze the types of summative assessment used in adult learning environments.
  • Create appropriate rubrics for summative assessments.

Week 3

  • Describe effective assessment techniques.
  • Compare and contrast traditional and authentic assessment.
  • Analyze the use of assessment to improve instruction and learning.
  • Create appropriate rubrics for authentic assessments.

Week 4

  • Compare and contrast assessment and program evaluation.
  • Examine the reasons why programs are evaluated.
  • Understand how to prepare a needs assessment.

Week 5

  • Examine a variety of program evaluation approaches.
  • Explore ways to determine learner, employee, or client satisfaction.
  • Examine decision making in evaluation.
  • Describe effective evaluation models.

Week 6

  • Identify data sources for evaluation.
  • Explore data analysis for evaluation.
  • Examine the purpose and process of evaluation reporting.
