Course Description

This course focuses on curriculum development and instructional strategies for K-12 educators. Participants examine the history of curriculum development, the role of curriculum in education, and the alignment of curriculum to state and national standards. School reform, curriculum implementation, assessment methods, textbook and material selection, and the adaptation of technology into curriculum are also explored. Particular emphasis will be placed on developing curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Course Objectives

Curriculum Development and School Reform

  • Describe curriculum development from a historical perspective.
  • Examine educational philosophies and their role in curriculum development.
  • Identify planning areas in the curriculum development process.
  • Describe educational reform movements.
  • Evaluate the effect of school reform on curriculum and instruction.

Role of Curriculum in Education

  • Compare the role of schooling at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, particularly in meeting the needs of learners with special needs.
  • Examine curriculum at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
  • Align content area curriculum to state and national standards.

Curriculum Development and Instructional Planning

  • Analyze the factors that affect curriculum development and instructional planning in schools.
  • Describe long-range, unit, and daily planning.
  • Examine different methods of assessment.

Technology and Curriculum

  • Examine issues to consider when selecting technology resources to supplement the curriculum.
  • Describe the textbook and material selection process.
  • Analyze ways to adapt technology use in the classroom to meet the needs of diverse learners.
