Course Description

This course examines theories of growing and learning from birth through adolescence. The stages of life and the developmental domains including physical, language, cognitive, and emotional, social, and moral are emphasized. In addition, participants explore investigative methods and research processes in human development.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

Attendance and participation are mandatory in all university courses, and specific requirements may differ by course. If attendance requirements are not met, a student may be removed from the course. Please review the Course Attendance Policy in the Catalog for more information.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Course Objectives

Fundamental Theories and Investigative Methods

  • Compare fundamental human development theories.
  • Describe research processes used in the field of human development.
  • Identify ethical issues in the human development field.

Physical Development, Cognitive Development, and Intellectual Power

  • Describe how physical development relates to social and cognitive development.
  • Analyze physical development from birth through adolescence.
  • Analyze the stages of cognitive development from birth through adolescence.
  • Describe intellectual power and its measurement.
  • Explain the effect of intellectual power on learning.

Language Development

  • Describe how language development relates to social and cognitive development.
  • Describe the components of language development.
  • Differentiate language development theories.
  • Compare the language development of diverse populations.

Emotional, Social, and Moral Development

  • Describe emotional development from birth through adolescence.
  • Analyze the relationship of self-concept and social development to student learning and behavior.
  • Explain the development of moral reasoning and self-control from birth through adolescence.
