Course Description

This course is designed to inform educators about the power of effective communication through awareness, understanding, and implementation. Emphasis is on communication competencies, interpersonal communication, active listening, the use of technology, and written, verbal, and nonverbal communication. Participants analyze instructional strategies and study the effect of ethics, the role of diversity, and effective communication styles for use with students, parents, and other stakeholders to promote a positive learning environment.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

Attendance and participation are mandatory in all university courses, and specific requirements may differ by course. If attendance requirements are not met, a student may be removed from the course. Please review the Course Attendance Policy in the Catalog for more information.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Course Objectives

Communication Competencies

  • Distinguish between the domains and roles of communication in education.
  • Compare verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Analyze teacher and student expectations of interpersonal communication.
  • Apply effective interpersonal communication skills.

Ethics and Diversity in Communication

  • Identify communication techniques to support a positive learning climate.
  • Describe how to use communication techniques to handle challenges in the classroom.
  • Explain the role of diversity within a classroom.
  • Address communication concerns regarding sexism, ethnocentrism, classism, racism, and ableism in 21st century education.
  • Apply the concepts of ethics and diversity as they relate to communication in the classroom.

Listening and Language

  • Analyze listening skills and barriers to effective listening.
  • Explain the importance of verbal delivery in the classroom.
  • Explain the importance of nonverbal functions in the classroom.
  • Apply communication competencies.

Delivering Instructional Strategies

  • Identify methods to communicate instruction.
  • Describe discussion methods to engage learners.
  • Explain the value of group communication for learning.
  • Integrate technology to support individual and group communication for learning.
