Course Description

This course explores the characteristics of and methods for identifying gifted and talented learners, including those in underrepresented populations. Programs, resources, and supports for the diverse needs of gifted and talented learners are examined. Participants investigate strategies and develop lessons to foster the academic, social, and emotional development of gifted and talented learners.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

Attendance and participation are mandatory in all university courses, and specific requirements may differ by course. If attendance requirements are not met, a student may be removed from the course. Please review the Course Attendance Policy in the Catalog for more information.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Course Objectives

Overview of Gifted and Talented Education

  • Compare definitions of gifted and talented, as well as theories related to gifted and talented education.
  • Examine characteristics of gifted and talented learners.
  • Identify qualities of effective educators of gifted and talented learners.
  • Describe theories and processes related to creativity and giftedness.

Awareness and Support of Underrepresented Populations

  • Identify issues surrounding gifted and talented identification and programs for culturally diverse and economically disadvantaged students.
  • Determine factors leading to success in gifted and talented learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Discuss differentiated needs of gifted and talented learners related to gender, and ethnic and racial minorities.
  • Investigate the needs of twice-exceptional learners.
  • Apply culturally sensitive strategies to instruction for gifted and talented learners.

Teaching Strategies for Gifted and Talented Learners

  • Differentiate instruction for gifted and talented learners.
  • Develop activities that foster higher-level thinking skills in gifted and talented learners.
  • Align instructional practices for gifted and talented learners to national standards.
  • Identify appropriate assessment strategies for gifted and talented learners.
  • Explain response to intervention (RTI) and its implications for services to support gifted and talented learners.

Communication and Collaborative Partnerships

  • Examine counseling strategies to support personal and social needs of gifted and talented learners.
  • Discuss the role of families in the education of gifted and talented learners.
  • Identify resources for teachers and families of gifted and talented learners.
