Course Description

This course explores the content standards, concepts, and instruction and assessment strategies for teaching physical education in the K-12 educational setting. Candidates examine topics including motor skill development, human movement principles, physical fitness, social skills development, and the value of fair play in games and sports. Candidates will also investigate classroom and field management, student safety strategies, and the process of selecting, designing, and adapting instruction for all student populations.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Additionally, this course has a prescriptive guided clinical experience which requires students to meet with a classroom teacher at their placement site, implement assessments, and teach a lesson to a small or whole group of students. 

This course is only available for enrollment to residents of California.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Examine state and national content standards for teaching physical education.
  • Describe the concept of physical literacy.
  • Explain the benefits and importance of physical education in K–12 education.
  • Identify the major concepts and skills addressed in physical education. 

Week 2

  • Examine approaches for unit and lesson planning in physical education.
  • Identify strategies for teaching students movement, motor skills, and physical fitness.
  • Explore instructional and supplemental resources for addressing the concepts of the PE content standards. 

Week 3

  • Identify best practices for using formative and summative assessment to determine student learning and development in physical education.
  • Investigate strategies for helping students develop self-confidence and self-worth through physical education.
  • Explore strategies that motivate students to achieve the goal of an active lifestyle and physical fitness. 

Week 4

  • Explore the standards for self-responsibility, social interaction, and group dynamics across grade levels.
  • Identify strategies that promote fair play during physical activities.
  • Examine approaches for teaching health concepts such as nutrition, healthy behaviors, and the risks of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. 

Week 5

  • Identify best practices for engaging students in the physical education classroom.
  • Examine current themes and trends for teaching physical education that promote safety, inclusion, tolerance, and appreciation of diversity.
  • Explain the relationship between teaching cues, feedback, and improved student learning. 

Week 6

  • Identify best practices for modifying instruction, adapting activities, and accommodating diverse learners in the physical education environment.
  • Investigate 21st century skills related to physical education teaching and learning.
  • Explore advocacy strategies and professional development opportunities for physical educators
