Course Description

This course explores the theory, application, and strategies for teaching visual arts in the K-12 educational setting. Candidates examine topics including current instructional theory, state and national standards, assessment practices, aesthetic valuing, artistic perception, and historical and cultural origins that influence the arts. Candidates will also investigate classroom engagement and management strategies, the use of technology in teaching and learning visual arts, and ways to adapt instruction for individual students and all populations.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Additionally, this course has a prescriptive guided clinical experience which requires students to meet with a classroom teacher at their placement site, implement assessments, and teach a lesson to a small or whole group of students. 

This course is only available for enrollment to residents of California.

Course Objectives

Week 1

• Examine the 4 artistic processes of arts education, including creating, presenting, responding, and connecting.

• Identify the state and national standards for teaching visual arts.

• Explain the importance of providing visual arts as a single subject curriculum.

• Describe the major concepts and skills addressed in visual arts education.

Week 2

• Investigate the role and development of visual arts in past and present contexts throughout the world.

• Examine the connection between culture, art, and diversity awareness and tolerance.

• Describe the contribution of art, specifically in California’s culture, society, and economy.

Week 3

• Examine approaches for unit and lesson planning in visual arts instruction, including arts integration.

• Identify strategies for teaching students how to evaluate art and how to translate ideas into original works of art.

• Identify strategies for building students’ comprehension, evaluation, and vocabulary skills in visual arts, including the elements and principles of design.

• Examine ways to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in the visual arts classroom.

Week 4

• Examine effective visual arts assessment, including the use of formative and summative assessments and rubrics.

• Identify motivational techniques that engage students in visual arts instruction.

• Identify classroom management strategies and techniques that address safety and behavior guidelines.

• Design visual arts instruction that engages students in the 4 artistic processes.

Week 5

• Examine legal and ethical issues related to the use of media and technology in visual arts education.

• Evaluate the strengths and limitations of media and technology as creative, expressive, and communicative tools.

• Explore the media arts discipline standards of the California Arts Education Framework.

Week 6

• Identify professional resources available and ways to stay current for visual arts educators.

• Explore the primary and community resources that may be used in the visual arts classroom.

• Describe the connection between visual arts and college and career opportunities, including well-being and lifelong learning.
