Course Description

This course explores the theory, application, and strategies for teaching visual arts in the K-12 educational setting. Candidates examine topics including current instructional theory, state and national standards, assessment practices, aesthetic valuing, artistic perception, and historical and cultural origins that influence the arts. Candidates will also investigate classroom engagement and management strategies, the use of technology in teaching and learning visual arts, and ways to adapt instruction for individual students and diverse populations.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Explain the components of quality arts programs or curriculum: criticism, history, production, and aesthetics. ??
  • Explain a rationale that supports visual arts in the single subject curriculum.
  • Examine how history and culture influence art.
  • Explain the contribution of art, especially in California culture, society, and economy.

Week 2

  • Identify the national and state standards in visual arts.?
  • Explain ways a teacher can discover the education needs of a diverse student population.
  • Analyze differentiating instruction for diverse students in the visual arts classroom.
  • Integrate visual arts in other content areas on a secondary level.
  • Design a lesson plan with appropriate curriculum mapping.

Week 3

  • Explain strategies for building students’ comprehension and vocabulary skills in visual arts including elements and principles of design.
  • Analyze effective motivational techniques to engage visual arts students.
  • Identify strategies to teach students how to translate thoughts, perceptions, and ideas into original works of art.
  • Develop strategies to teach students how to critically evaluate a work of art.

Week 4

  • Evaluate the characteristics of effective visual arts assessment.
  • Analyze formative and summative visual arts assessments and rubrics.
  • Construct a variety of assessments.
  • Explain how to use assessment results to reflect and adapt instruction.

Week 5

  • Analyze the legal and ethical issues regarding the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Explore various technologies and media that can be used to support visual arts instruction.
  • Demonstrate the use of technology for enhancing or creating visual arts.

Week 6

  • Explore strategies to utilize community resources in the visual arts classroom.
  • Identify opportunities for careers in art.
  • Analyze professional resources available to visual arts teachers.
  • Analyze how to stay current in visual arts education.
  • Explain effective classroom management techniques that address safety and behavior guidelines.
