Course Description

This course prepares K-12 educators to use effective instructional techniques, methodology, and assessments for English language learners (ELLs). Participants apply researched theory focusing on sheltered instruction, particularly the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model. Instructional techniques for teaching students of limited English proficiency, including instruction in the English language and development of the student's mastery of the language skills of reading, writing, and listening/speaking, differentiated instruction, lesson comprehension, integration and use of English language standards, special education, and parental involvement as related to English language learners are also explored.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Individuals enrolling in UOPX TESOL courses will NOT satisfy course requirements for the NM TESOL endorsement. Course Objectives

Foundations of Effective Instruction and Language Standards for English Language Learners

  • Describe the key components of sheltered instruction for English language learners and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model.
  • Identify the instructional relationship between basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) and cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP).
  • Define the purpose of English language standards (reading, writing, and listening/speaking).
  • Describe how to build background knowledge and connect prior learning experiences to new learning.

Lesson Planning and Effective Instruction for English Language Learners

  • Discuss the key principles of standards-based curriculum and instruction for English language learners.
  • Differentiate between content and language objectives.
  • Explain how to ensure that content and activities are age-appropriate and meaningful.
  • Describe methods and materials to differentiate instruction.
  • Integrate English language standards (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) into lesson planning.

Instructional Techniques, Lesson Delivery, and Assessment for English Language Learners

  • Examine instructional techniques and activities for vocabulary development and to ensure students understand content.
  • Determine techniques to support discussion and interaction during instruction.
  • Describe how to provide hands-on practice for English language learners.
  • Evaluate English language standards (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in lesson delivery and assessment.
  • Explain how to provide effective feedback to English language learners.

Special Education and English Language Learners’ Families and Communities

  • Describe intervention techniques for struggling English language learners.
  • Determine when special education referrals for English language learners are appropriate.
  • Analyze how culture influences family involvement.
  • Examine ways to involve culturally diverse families.
  • Define key components of effective family involvement programs.
