Course Description

This course is designed to address common social skill deficits in autism spectrum disorders: social cognition, social communication, social initiation, and social reciprocity. Identification of various ways to assess social skills is addressed. Participants focus on interventions that promote social skill acquisition and enhance social skill performance. Instructional tools and adaptations necessary to foster the development of social skills are also explored.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Topics and Objectives

Communication and Social Skills Development

  • Analyze typical social-emotional development.
  • Explain the connection between language and social development.
  • Identify characteristics that may impede the development of social skills in students with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Describe communication deficits typical of students with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Explain how to build social communication skills.
  • Evaluate social skills needed for positive peer relationships.

Assessment and the Diagnostic Process

  • Identify assessment tools for diagnosing individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Describe the relationship between assessment and instruction.
  • Analyze the role of the special educator in the assessment process.

Interventions Based on Applied Behavior Analysis

  • Summarize applied behavior analysis.
  • Identify types of applied behavior analysis.
  • Explain how applied behavior analysis can be used for challenging behaviors.

Effective Strategies and Parental Involvement

  • Design social stories that address social situations.
  • Identify sensory integration strategies that can promote socialization.
  • Analyze collaborative relationships with parents of students with autism spectrum disorders.
