BPA/200 - Public Sector Communications
Course Description
This course introduces students to the foundations of communication in a public sector setting. Students are exposed to various topics related to interpersonal and group communication within the context of public sector applications. Students will develop skills in various mediums of verbal, nonverbal, and written communication genres. The utilization of social media and technology will be explored along with cross-cultural communications. Upon completing the course, students will have an awareness of various communication styles and genres and be able to identify areas for further exploration of communication as a skill.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Identify communication skills and types in the public sector
- Discuss the characteristics of effective communication
- Discuss communication and culture
Week 2
- Discuss communication types/genres including verbal and nonverbal
- Outline communication and relationships
- Identify the values of listening
Week 3
- Identify the effects of technology and social media on communication
- Discuss a communication plan for public organizations
- Identify conflict resolution through communication
Week 4
- Discuss the need for public speaking
- Develop informative methods of internal and external communications
- Discuss Intercultural Communication
Week 5
- Identify group and team communication
- Discuss communication and leadership
- Identify written communication and reporting
- Discuss the practice of persuasive writing and messaging
