BPA/361 - Grant Writing
Course Description
This course explores the basics of grant and proposal writing in public administration for federal, state, and private funding. This course includes research, design, and evaluation of grant writing components and explores requirements for the various types of grants available. This course also includes developmental steps for an effective grant proposal.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Describe the characteristics of a non-profit agency.
- Identify possible funding sources for grants and contracts.
- Evaluate needs criteria used by funding agencies.
- Develop strategies for teamwork.
Week 2
- Define the problem the intended grant will address.
- Identify barriers to solving the problem.
- Analyze the problem in relation to the logic model.
Week 3
- Analyze problem-solving models.
- Develop goals and objectives for grant-funded programs.
- Identify problem-solving and planning steps.
- Evaluate grant application formats.
Week 4
- Identify common project budget categories.
- Quantify project budgetary needs.
- Identify line item categories commonly associated with grants.
- Develop a project budget for grant funding.
Week 5
- Determine specific submission guidelines for funding agencies.
- Understand the role of the title page and cover letter in a grant proposal.
- Identify types of post-grant reports.
- Evaluate post-project success.
