Course Description

This course provides students with an in-depth evaluation of crisis and trauma counseling, including emergency and disaster situations. Students examine crisis theory, methods of crisis response, psychological effects associated with trauma, assessment strategies, and intervention models. Students analyze theoretical approaches as they relate to crisis management and trauma counseling.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

This course has a prerequisite. Please see details in the Prerequisite section below. Students may complete a maximum of four (4) graduate level courses from the available counseling course selection.

Students residing in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, or North Carolina and individuals who live outside the United States are not eligible to enroll in this course.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Examine the basic rationale and the theoretical and conceptual information needed for applied crisis intervention.
  • Explore the cultural implications of crisis management.
  • Analyze the Triage Assessment System for crisis intervention.

Week 2

  • Analyze the foundational skills of crisis management in the counseling setting.
  • Differentiate between crisis intervention and long-term therapy.
  • Examine the special considerations in electronic crisis counseling.
  • Describe counseling ethics in crisis response.

Week 3

  • Articulate the appropriate assessment and treatment strategies for crises related to PTSD.
  • Explain the appropriate use of suicide prevention strategies.
  • Apply counseling interventions for clients who have experienced sexual trauma.
  • Describe the differences between the assessment instruments for crisis triage.

Week 4

  • Analyze the effect of abuse and partner violence in domestic relationships.
  • Examine the relationship between codependency and substance abuse.
  • Apply counseling models and strategies for coping with unresolved grief.
  • Describe crisis response team models in a school environment.

Week 5

  • Explain appropriate responses to violent behavior within public institutions.
  • Describe basic crisis negotiation strategies and survival techniques.
  • Explain counselor burnout, vicarious traumatization, and compassion fatigue.
  • Analyze the theoretical basis and operating paradigm for large-scale disasters.
  • Demonstrate the integration of crisis with trauma counseling skills.

Week 6

  • Demonstrate critical thinking, independent problem solving, and performance capabilities in relation to crisis counseling and management.
  • Demonstrate analysis and synthesis of information from multiple sources in a crisis management situation.

Prerequisites

This graduate level course requires proof of completion of a graduate degree in counseling or related field (e.g. Psychology, school counseling, school psychology, gerontology counseling, rehabilitative counseling).
