Course Description

The goal of this course is to learn about the many facets of human sexuality and the treatment of sexual dysfunctions in a safe and respectful environment. Topics include the physiology, psychology, and sociology of sexuality, including the effects of sexual attitudes and functioning on individuals and families. Clinical applications, including the treatment of sexual difficulty and dysfunction will also be explored. Students will develop familiarity with the language and terms of sexology and demonstrate an ability to apply this knowledge to clinical situations.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Students residing in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, and North Carolina or individuals who live outside the United States are not eligible to enroll in this course.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Identify the proper anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems.
  • Identify the stages in the male and female sexual response cycles.
  • Identify ethical codes that pertain to sexuality counseling.
  • Determine social and cultural elements that influence an individual’s beliefs and values regarding sexuality.
  • Analyze the role of personal values and beliefs regarding human sexuality in sexuality counseling.

Week 2

  • Identify DSM-5 diagnostic criteria of disorders related to sexuality and gender.
  • Evaluate the use of different assessment tools and techniques in sexuality counseling.
  • Formulate a theoretical conceptualization of sexual addiction.

Week 3

  • Analyze treatment approaches for issues presented in sexuality counseling.
  • Justify the use of theoretical treatment interventions.
  • Assess personal comfort levels in discussing human sexuality topics in assessment and treatment with clients.
  • Apply ethical decision-making to specific scenarios in sexuality counseling.

Week 4

  • Determine legal and ethical standards related to differing values and beliefs in sexuality counseling.
  • Examine the role of transferences and countertransference in sexuality counseling.
  • Determine strategies for counseling clients with differing values and beliefs than your own.
  • Evaluate theoretical approaches for working with clients of different social and cultural backgrounds.

Week 5

  • Examine the unique issues survivors of rape may experience.
  • Analyze treatment approaches for clients who have experienced different types of rape.
  • Design a treatment program for survivors of child sex trafficking.

Week 6

  • Analyze theoretical conceptualizations of a client in sexuality counseling.
  • Integrate positive sexuality in the assessment and treatment processes.
  • Synthesize the assessment and treatment of a client in sexuality counseling.

Notes

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.

This graduate level course requires proof of completion of a graduate degree in counseling or related field (e.g. Psychology, school counseling, school psychology, gerontology counseling, rehabilitative counseling).
