Course Description

This course focuses on the research, theories, and concepts related to early childhood growth and development. Participants examine the physical, motor, cognitive, language, literacy, social and emotional development of diverse children from birth through age eight. Family and cultural influences on early childhood growth and development are also explored.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Topics and Objectives

Research and Theories of Early Childhood Growth and Development; Parents, Families, and Children

  • Compare child development theories.
  • Select methods to assess children’s development and learning needs.
  • Apply research methods commonly used to study a child’s development.
  • Evaluate the influence of parents and families on early childhood growth and development.
  • Examine cultural influences on early childhood growth and development.
  • Analyze protective and major risk factors within families and how they influence child development.

Growth and Development: Birth Through Toddler Years

  • Analyze concepts of physical growth and motor development of infants and toddlers.
  • Connect concepts of cognitive, language, and literacy development of infants and toddlers.
  • Evaluate concepts of social and emotional development of infants and toddlers.

Growth and Development: Preschool Years

  • Analyze concepts of physical growth and motor development of preschool age children.
  • Connect concepts of cognitive, language, and literacy development of preschool age children.
  • Evaluate concepts of social and emotional development of preschool age children.

Growth and Development: Primary Years

  • Analyze concepts of physical growth and motor development of primary school-age children.
  • Connect concepts of cognitive, language, and literacy development of primary school-age children.
  • Evaluate concepts of social and emotional development of primary school-age children.
