Course Description

This course establishes a context for teaching and assessing K-8 students in physical education and health based on a scope and sequence, and on state and national standards. Candidates examine framework-based teaching strategies effective in helping K-8 students develop a variety of motor skills and abilities, recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle, gain knowledge of human movement, learn the rules and strategies of games and sports, and develop self-confidence and self-worth.  They also examine framework-based teaching strategies effective in helping their students achieve the goals of lifelong health; recognize nutrition; acknowledge risks associated with drugs and alcohol; understand growth and development; and utilize health-related information, products, and services. Additionally, this course explores instructional approaches for integrating physical education and health with other content.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Identify the purpose and scope of health education and physical education.
  • Examine state and national health education standards.
  • Examine state and national physical education standards.

Week 2

  • Research effective strategies for teaching motor skills.
  • Research the foundations of human movement.
  • Examine strategies for teaching rules and strategies of games and sports.
  • Analyze strategies for helping students develop self-confidence and self-worth through PE.

Week 3

  • Develop strategies for helping students achieve the goals of lifelong health and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Explain how growth and development impacts instruction and the classroom environment.
  • Examine strategies for teaching students how to determine the validity of health products and services such as diet or nutrition products.
  • Examine innovative strategies for teaching nutrition.
  • Examine teaching strategies for teaching the risks of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use.

Week 4

  • Design an integrated instructional unit.
  • Analyze ways to address literacy through physical education and health.
  • Describe how collaboration can enhance the learning experience for students.
  • Describe ways to modify physical education and health content for diverse learners.
