Course Description

This course will provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies that are required to identify and analyze risks associated with environmental problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing these problems.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Ecosystems and Sustainability

  • Explain why environmental sustainability is an important concern of environmental science.
  • Examine the flow of energy in ecosystems.
  • Describe living and nonliving components of a biome.
  • Apply the concepts of natural selection and succession to a changing ecosystem.

Human Population and the Environment

  • Describe how environmental hazards affect human population.
  • Explain the factors that produce changes in population size.
  • Identify the environmental benefits and challenges of urbanization.

Air and Water Pollution

  • Examine air and water pollutants.
  • Determine the effects of pollutants on human, plant, and animal life.
  • Identify the impact of human activities on a water resource.

Environmental Resources: Biological, Waste, and Energy

  • Determine the value of biological diversity.
  • Compare alternative solutions for waste management.
  • Determine the impact of fossil fuels on the environment.
  • Identify alternative energy resources and their potential to replace fossil fuels.
  • Describe challenges associated with energy resource management.

Environmental Resources: Mineral, Soil, Land, and Agriculture

  • Describe types of minerals and the properties of soil.
  • Describe the types of forestry, rangeland, resources, and management strategies.
  • Analyze the impact of human activities on natural resources.
  • Rationalize a sustainable plan for addressing an environmental issue.
