Course Description

This course examines environmental problems from a local, national, and international perspective. Federal legislation will be reviewed on air pollution and water quality. Students will be introduced to control techniques for treating air and water, and the emerging environmental issues such as global climate changes, bioterrorism, organic pollutants, and industrial ecology.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

· Explain the role that economics play in environmental management.

· Explain the soil nutrient cycles and nutrient availability.

  • Explain soil erosion, its consequences, and how to manage it.

Week 2

  • Analyze the relationship between the hydrological cycle and water shortages and flooding.
  • Describe major water pollutants, their sources, and their effects on the environment.
  • Evaluate legislation to control various types of pollution.

Week 3

  • Analyze causes and potential impacts of climate change.
  • Identify major sources of air pollution and their effects on human health and the environment.
  • Analyze methods to reduce air pollution.
  • Evaluate costs and benefits of renewable and non-renewable energy resources.

Week 4

  • Explain integrated pest management, its components, and its benefits relative to traditional pest control.
  • Analyze problems associated with invasive species.
  • Explain how pathogens affect human health.
  • Evaluate practices for sustainable harvest of aquatic and forest resources.

Week 5

  • Identify environmental concerns associated with mining and mineral processing.
  • Evaluate methods for managing waste.
  • Analyze issues associated with hazardous waste disposal.
  • Explain methods for ecosystem restoration.

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
