Course Description

This course will prepare students to make insurance policy recommendations as part of a financial plan. After completion of this course, students will be able to apply concepts of medical, life, and property insurance to financial planning, and understand concepts underlying risk and insurance management for financial plans.

This undergradate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Examine the various forms of risk. 
  • Explain the risk management process and its application in the insurance industry. 
  • Determine the primary role of risk management in the insurance industry. 

Week 2

  • Examine the basics of insurance applications and contracts. 
  • Differentiate between term and whole life insurance. 
  • Explain the insurance premium computation process. 
  • Elaborate on the general provisions of life insurance contracts. 

Week 3

  • Analyze the key components of disability insurance. 
  • Distinguish between short-term versus long-term disability insurance coverage. 
  • Explain the key features of health insurance plans. 
  • Analyze the primary features of long-term care insurance. 

Week 4

  • Describe the key features of homeowners insurance. 
  • Examine the primary coverage of the various homeowners' forms. 
  • Explain the four sections of the Personal Auto Policy. 

Week 5

  • Elaborate on the classes of commercial property and liability insurance. 
  • Explain the distinguishing characteristics of the classes of commercial property. 

Prerequisites

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
