Course Description

In this course, students are introduced to medical terminology used within the health care industry. The course will cover medical terminology related to the main body systems and their functions as well as word building through the use of word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms. Also, students will explore the importance of medical terminology in the health care industry.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Introduction to Medical Terminology

  • Explain the origin of medical terminology.
  • Explain the importance of medical terminology.
  • Identify the components of medical terminology.

The Use of Medical Terminology

  • Identify medical terminology used in medical reports.
  • Identify common medical terminology used in medical reports within health care.

Medical Terminology for Integumentary, Musculoskeletal, and Nervous Systems

  • Identify the integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems and their functions.
  • Identify the word parts associated with the integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems.
  • Identify the common medical terms associated with the integumentary, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems and their use in medical reports.

Medical Terminology for Endocrine, Cardiovascular, and Respiratory Systems

  • Identify the endocrine, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems and their functions.
  • Identify the word parts associated with the endocrine, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.
  • Identify the common medical terms associated with the endocrine, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems and their use in medical reports.

Medical Terminology for Gastrointestinal and Urinary Systems

  • Identify the gastrointestinal and urinary systems and their functions.
  • Identify the word parts associated with the gastrointestinal and urinary systems.
  • Identify the common medical terms associated with the gastrointestinal and urinary systems and their use in medical reports.
