HCS/341 - Human Resources in Health Care
Course Description
This course examines the complexities and multiple issues involved in human resources management in health care organizations. Students will examine the strategic role of human resource management in response to changes in the health care industry. In addition, issues such as recruitment, retention, performance management, organizational development, and employee relations are examined. Federal, state, and professional regulatory requirements specific to health care are emphasized.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Identify human resource management’s role in the health care industry.
- Describe the functional roles of the human resource department.
- Examine the effect of legal, safety, and regulatory requirements on human resource processes.
Week 2
- Identify recruitment strategies and methods as part of workforce planning needs.
- Identify the different components of the selection process.
- Differentiate between job analysis, job description, and job specification.
Week 3
- Explain why training and education are vital in health care.
- Explain the importance of measuring competencies in the health care profession.
- Describe the process for tracking and evaluating training effectiveness.
Week 4
- Describe performance appraisal standards.
- Identify barriers and guidelines for effective performance appraisals.
- Recognize the due diligence of progressive discipline of employees.
Week 5
- Identify current and future human resource issues in health care.
- Examine the changing role of human resource management in response to changes in the health care industry.
