Course Description

This course examines the basic principles and concepts of the aging process, including the physical, social, emotional, and mental components of health. Benefits of health promotion and preventive action for the aging are also explored.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Describe the demographics of our current aging population.
  • Identify the impact of current health care statistics.
  • Examine the concept of ageism.
  • Discuss the theories of aging.

Week 2

  • Describe the physiological changes that occur in the aging process.
  • Identify the functional changes that occur as you age.
  • Explain the impact of sensory changes.

Week 3

  • Identify the aspects of cognitive functioning and possible impairments in the older adult.
  • Recognize the emotional aspects related to aging.
  • Describe the changing social roles of older adults.
  • Give examples of resources available to address the psychosocial aspects of aging.

Week 4

  • List the leading chronic diseases seen in the current older adult population.
  • Explore the prevalence of high-risk behaviors.
  • Describe the stages of care within the health care continuum.
  • Specify various wellness programs applicable to the older adult.

Week 5

  • Identify changes needed to support a booming aging population.
  • Examine innovative technologies that can support and retain aging independence.
