HCS/457 - Public and Community Health
Course Description
This course provides health care students with an introduction to the development of the public health system and through the epidemiological model, students will examine the impact of environmental factors on disease trends as well as communicable disease controls. Students will develop beginning skills in community assessment and health promotion strategies. The course also reflects the advances in population health in the community health field. This course represents the concept that many populations of concern in health programs are not solely defined by geographic location.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Define public health.
- Explain the historical development of public health.
- Analyze the structure and function of public health at national, state, and local levels.
- Identify careers within public health.
Week 2
- Define epidemiology and its relationship to public health.
- Discuss the uses and effects of demographic data, surveillance data, and vital statistics in public and community health.
Week 3
- Identify environmental factors that influence the health and wellness of populations.
- Describe current communicable disease threats and efforts to control their effects.
- Explain the influence of lifestyles, socioeconomic status, and community resources on public and community health.
Week 4
- Analyze the spectrum of healthcare facilities that exist in the US.
- Compare health care systems of various countries.
- Analyze approaches to connecting public health and the healthcare system.
Week 5
- Describe lessons learned.
- Identify future trends in public health.
