HRM/546 - Human Resource Law
Course Description
This course prepares human resource managers to comply with human resource laws and regulations. Other topics include: workforce planning and employment, human resource development activities, compensation and benefits, labor relations, employee grievances, and workplace safety.
This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Differentiate “employee” from other types of employment relationships.
- Examine the concept of “at-will” employment and its exceptions.
- Explore concepts of employment discrimination.
- Evaluate legal and ethical issues at each stage of the employment process.
Week 2
- Explain major provisions of VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
- Discuss the history and present application of affirmative action in employment practices.
- Determine ways an employer can minimize liability for discrimination based on race or color.
- Determine ways an employer can minimize liability for discrimination based on national origin.
Week 3
- Evaluate ways an employer can minimize liability for discrimination based on gender.
- Differentiate between the two types of sexual harassment.
- Assess potential employer liability for sexual harassment.
- Survey current legal requirements surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination in employment settings.
Week 4
- Recommend ways an employer can minimize liability for discrimination based on religion.
- Explain an employer’s responsibilities in relation to reasonable accommodation.
- Distinguish between the ADEA (Age Discrimination in Employment Act) and VII.
- Recommend ways in which an employer can minimize liability for discrimination based on age and disability.
Week 5
- Interpret key labor laws.
- Evaluate key statutory obligations that establish employment benefits and protections.
- List major requirements of the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) for employers.
- Examine an employer’s responsibility to provide a safe working environment under OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
Week 6
- Assess expectations for on-the-job privacy.
- Differentiate the expectation of privacy expectations for employees in the private sector versus employees in the public sector.
- Craft employer policies that account for employee monitoring privacy considerations.
- Assess legal and ethical aspects of drug/alcohol and genetic testing in the workplace.
