Course Description

This course will survey English literature from medieval times until the 18th century. The influence of local economic, religious, cultural, and political changes on a diverse range of literary works, genres, and movements of the time will be explored.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

The Early Middle Ages

  • Identify major English works of the Middle Ages.
  • Describe major linguistic structures of medieval English literature.
  • Explain how medieval English literature reflects English national identity.

Middle English Literature

  • Identify major English works of the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • Describe the major linguistic structures of 14th- and 15th-century English literature.
  • Explain how 14th- and 15th-century English literature reflects English national identity.

The 16th Century

  • Identify major English works and authors of the 16th century.
  • Describe the major linguistic structures of 16th-century English literature.
  • Explain how 16th-century English literature reflects English national identity.

The Early 17th Century

  • Identify the major English works and authors of the 17th century.
  • Describe the major linguistic structures of 17th-century English literature.
  • Explain how 17th-century English literature reflects English national identity.

The Restoration and the 18th Century

  • Identify major English works and authors of the 18th century.
  • Describe the major linguistic structures of 18th-century English literature.
  • Explain how 18th-century English literature reflects English national identity.
  • Compare 18th-century English literature to earlier English literature.
