LIT/245 - Survey of English Literature Since 1798
Course Description
This course will survey major authors, ideologies, and historical contexts of English literature from the 19th century to the present. The influence of local economic, religious, cultural, and political changes on a diverse range of literary works, genres, and movements of the time will be explored.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
The Romantic Period
- Identify the major authors, works, and literary movements of the Romantic period.
- Analyze how Romantic literature reflects the political, social, cultural, and philosophical changes of the period.
Victorian Poetry
- Identify the major poets, poems, and literary movements of the Victorian period.
- Analyze how Victorian poetry reflects the political, social, cultural, and philosophical changes of the period.
Victorian Prose
- Identify the major authors, works, and literary movements of the Victorian period.
- Analyze how Victorian prose reflects the political, social, cultural, and philosophical changes of the period.
The 20th Century I: Modernism
- Identify the major authors, works, and literary movements of the Modernist period.
- Analyze how Modernist literature reflects the political, social, cultural, and philosophical changes of the period.
The 20th Century II: Postwar and Postmodern Literature
- Identify the major authors, works, and literary movements of the postmodern period.
- Analyze how postwar and postmodern literature reflect the political, social, cultural, and philosophical changes of the period.
