LIT/265 - Survey of American Literature Since 1860
Course Description
This course will survey the post-Civil War era writings in America. The influence of local economic, religious, cultural, and political changes on a diverse range of literary works, genres, and movements of the time will be explored.
This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives
Literature of a Changing Nation
- Identify the major authors and works during the period of 1865 to 1912.
- Describe the literary movements and trends from 1865 to 1912.
- Explain how the realist and naturalist movements affected literature from 1865 to 1912.
- Analyze factors that influenced American literature from 1865 to 1912.
Women Writers of the Post–Bellum Era
- Identify the major works of female authors during the period of 1865 to 1912.
- Describe the role of women in literature from 1865 to 1912.
- Analyze factors that influenced American female writers from 1865 to 1912.
- Compare male and female perspectives in literature from 1865 to 1912.
The Early 20th Century: Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance
- Identify the major authors and works of the early 20th century.
- Describe how the Modernist movement affected American literature and culture.
- Describe how the Harlem Renaissance affected American literature and culture.
- Analyze factors that influenced American literature of the early 20th century.
American Ethnic Literature
- Identify the major authors and works of ethnic literature.
- Describe the influence of ethnic literature in America.
- Analyze factors that influenced American ethnic literature.
Contemporary Literature
- Identify the major authors and literary works in America since 1945.
- Describe contemporary literary movements and trends.
- Analyze factors influencing contemporary American literature.
- Analyze the role of literature in 21st-century American society.
