MTE/516 - Foundations of the Professional Educator
Course Description
This course introduces teaching as both an art and a science. Teacher candidates will examine the historical foundations of education as well as current issues and trends. Candidates will reflect on their dispositions and motivations to teach and explore basic philosophies, professionalism, and legal and ethical ramifications in education.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Analyze the evolution of American education.
- Explain the current organizational structure of the American educational system.
- Examine the role of government and community in education.
Week 2
- Examine certification requirements for your state.
- Explain the significance of teacher standards in professional practice.
- Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities of teachers.
Week 3
- Examine the philosophical foundations and principles of education.
- Describe the relationship between educational philosophies and classroom practice.
- Assess the role of teacher dispositions and motivation in student learning.
- Develop a personal philosophy of education.
Week 4
- Analyze current issues and trends in education.
- Examine school choice considerations for parents.
- Discuss the implications of state standards on teaching.
- Describe the role of assessment in teaching.
- Describe the effects technological advancements have made on education.
Week 5
- Describe the challenges of teaching in today’s diverse classrooms and schools.
- Discuss the impact a teacher’s own bias and personal beliefs have on teaching practice.
- Assess the benefits multicultural education has on student learning.
- Explore ways to create an inclusive classroom environment.
Week 6
- Describe how teacher participation in professional development enhances student learning.
- Describe methods for collaborating with stakeholders to enhance learning.
- Examine practices that lead to becoming a reflective practitioner in the field of education.
