Course Description

Students apply advanced quantitative reasoning skills to solve real world problems. This course emphasizes modeling skills, statistical methods, and probability to create, analyze, and communicate solutions.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

Mathematics Fundamentals

  • Convert between percentages, decimals and fractions.
  • Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on fractions.
  • Solve problems using order of operations.
  • Determine the solution to square root problems.
  • Solve real-world application problems using mathematical fundamentals.

Numeracy

  • Evaluate exponential equations using the laws of exponents.
  • Use estimations to determine solutions to problems.
  • Use basic laws of exponents and scientific notation to solve problems.
  • Solve application problems.

Proportional Reasoning

  • Determine the ratio of the given data.
  • Use dimensional analysis of fractions to convert units.
  • Use percentages to describe change.
  • Use graphs to determine ratios.
  • Use proportional reasoning to determine percentage-based outcomes.
  • Use appropriate problem-solving techniques to solve application problems that have proportional and nonproportional relationships.
  • Solve application problems using proportional reasoning skills.

Functions

  • Describe the difference between linear and exponential functions.
  • Analyze linear and exponential functions.
  • Create linear and exponential models from data.
  • Use linear and exponential models to draw conclusions.
  • Explain the meaning of intercept in real-world scenarios.
  • Use technology to calculate linear and exponential regression.
  • Solve application problems.

Quantitative Reasoning

  • Use sets and Venn diagrams to solve problems.
  • Analyze data using Venn diagrams.
  • Rearrange formulas to isolate a specific variable.
  • Solve for a variable in a given equation.
  • Analyze arguments to determine their validity.
  • Solve real-world scenarios using quantitative reasoning skills.
