Course Description
This course provides students with an in-depth investigation of cross-cultural issues and perspectives in the field of psychology. Students learn to identify and consider cultural and systemic variables in psychological theory, research and practice. Multicultural issues, social dynamics, social justice and valued diversity are emphasized.
This graduate course is 6 weeks.
This course provides a foundation of knowledge in the field of psychology. This course does not prepare students for any type of professional certification or licensure.

Course Objectives
Week 1
- Define social psychology and multicultural psychology.
- Explain the concept of situationism.
- Summarize research strategies in social psychology.
- Evaluate the effect of group influence on the self-using classic and contemporary literature.
- Compare and contrast conformity and obedience.
Week 2
- Differentiate between prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.
- Analyze the concept of social bias.
- Explain the differences between subtle and blatant bias.
- Identify strategies that can be used to overcome social biases.
- Discuss the influence of social psychology research on humanity.
Week 3
- Define key concepts of multiculturalism.
- Explain cultural characteristics of diverse populations.
- Identify issues related to multicultural diversity.
- Explore the history and role of multicultural psychology in society.
Week 4
- Identify instances of ethnocentricity in psychological theories.
- Identify considerations unique to multicultural psychological research.
- Explain the ethical guidelines unique to multicultural research.
Week 5
- Define diversity.
- Discuss the scope of diverse populations.
- Describe how being a part of a diverse population influences an individual’s personal psychology.
- Evaluate sociopolitical factors and their psychological effect on diverse populations.
Week 6
- Describe emerging issues in multicultural psychology.
- Examine the evolution of multicultural psychology.
- Address emerging social issues using multicultural principles.
