Course Description

This course will introduce students to the science and practice of psychological testing and assessment. Students will learn to evaluate the validity and reliability of various psychological assessments. Students examine the psychometric properties and appropriate applications of commonly used educational, intelligence, career, and personality assessment instruments. Students will learn how to bridge the gap between diagnostic interpretations and social, ethical, and individual considerations in assessment when working with different groups of people.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

This course provides a foundation of knowledge in the field of psychology. This course does not prepare students for any type of professional certification or licensure.

Course Objectives

Week 1

• Explain the use of psychological testing terminology.
• Evaluate the assumptions of psychological testing and assessment.
• Analyze the cultural and legal issues of psychological testing and assessment.
• Explain the importance of norms in psychological testing and assessment.

Week 2

• Determine the appropriate scale of measurement in assessment.
• Differentiate between the types of reliability.
• Differentiate between the types of validity.
• Demonstrate the use of standard scores.
• Explain the criteria for using standardized scores.

Three 3

Conduct a utility analysis.

• Explain the development process of cut-off scores in psychological testing and assessment.
• Evaluate various approaches for scaling psychological constructs.
• Analyze methods of item selection for psychological testing and assessment.

Week 4

• Analyze the relationship between the major theories of personality and assessments of personality.
• Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of personality assessment methods.
• Describe the application of psychological assessments in the workplace.

Week 5

• Evaluate the influence of the definitions of intelligence on intelligence testing.
• Evaluate the validity of measurements of intelligence.
• Explain the various roles of assessment in education.
• Differentiate between intelligence and achievement assessments.

Week 6

• Describe the effect of ethical and cultural issues on clinical or counseling assessment.
• Explain the use of neuropsychological assessment instruments.

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
