Course Description

This course surveys various professional activities in psychology with emphasis on the legal and ethical responsibilities of psychological researchers and practitioners. Students will study the APA Code of Ethics and analyze case studies involving assessment, research and practice in psychology. Topics include ethics in research, the purpose and function of internal review boards (IRBs), participant and client rights, informed consent, confidentiality, duty to warn and protect, dual relationships, supervision, consultation, ethical considerations when working with diverse populations, and the application of ethical decision-making models.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

This course provides a foundation of knowledge in the field of psychology. This course does not prepare students for any type of professional certification or licensure.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Explain the APA Ethics Code decision-making process.
  • Discriminate between the use of aspirational principles and enforceable standards.

Week 2

  • Evaluate ethical resolution processes that pertain to conflicting organizational interests.
  • Analyze the ethical conflicts related to psychological assessment in forensic cases.
  • Determine actions that are ethically required when psychological assessment materials are misused.

Week 3

  • Evaluate the ethicality of dual relationships.
  • Determine behavior and activities that constitute violations of professional boundaries.
  • Explain the purpose of informed consent.

Week 4

  • Apply ethical standards for maintaining, disseminating, and disposing confidential records.
  • Evaluate the ethical considerations of expert testimony as they relate to preserving the rights of the
  • client.
  • Justify decisions based on the ethical guidelines for maintaining research records.

Week 5

  • Evaluate the implications of unethical disclosure of client information.
  • Apply the ethical guidelines of professional supervision of trainees in professional psychology
  • programs to a specific case study.
  • Determine whether case studies meet internal review board guidelines.

Week 6

  • Justify the selection process of culture-neutral assessments.
  • Evaluate ethical considerations relating to informed consent of vulnerable populations.
  • Determine the criteria that must be met for ethical termination of therapy.

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process. To meet to a course prerequisite requirement, a student must have successfully completed the prerequisite course at University of Phoenix, provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution or have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
