Course Description

This course focuses on the methodology and assessment strategies that enhance learning at the secondary level across content areas. The teacher candidate will use assessment data to enhance instruction that meets students' varied learning needs. Teacher candidates will apply essential strategies to promote critical thinking and incorporate meaningful context to promote a deeper understanding of content. This course also explores multiple perspectives of students as learners of secondary content as well as current research on pedagogy.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Address the academic, socioemotional, and developmental needs of adolescents in lesson planning. 
  • Create learning experiences appropriate for curriculum goals and content standards. 
  • Determine research-based methods for teaching a specific content area at the secondary level. 
  • Utilize assessment strategies to determine students’ knowledge for use in planning. 

Week 2

  • Analyze how students’ personal, cultural, family, and community values affect learning.
  • Reflect on ways to integrate culturally relevant content to build on learners’ background knowledge and achieve learning goals. 
  • Analyze how multiple intelligences and learning styles influence instructional design. 
  • Examine ways to differentiate instruction and assessment to meet the needs of diverse learners. 
  • Evaluate resources and supports available to meet the needs of all students, including those with exceptional needs. 

Week 3

  • Evaluate strategies for utilizing multiple representations, perspectives, and explanations to enhance learners’ understanding of content standards. 
  • Identify ways to foster learners’ engagement through collaboration and critical thinking. 
  • Critique effectiveness of lesson delivery and make recommendations for changes. 
  • Evaluate the use of data to identify needs and enhance instruction for diverse learners. 
  • Develop questioning techniques that deepen students’ content knowledge and check for understanding. 
  • Describe ways to develop learners’ understanding and use of the academic language of the discipline. 

Week 4

  • Determine methods for implementing 21st century skills to foster learning and creativity in a variety of environments. 
  • Determine strategies for guiding students in developing innovative solutions to complex, interdisciplinary, and real-world problems through the use of technology. 
  • Examine the use of technology to meet the needs of diverse learners. 
  • Formulate ways to model collaboration and evaluation of student work in the digital age. 

Week 5

  • Formulate ways to support students in developing innovative solutions to complex, interdisciplinary, real-world problems. 
  • Develop ways to build students’ local and global awareness and understanding through the development of interdisciplinary instruction. 
  • Evaluate strategies to implement learner literacy development across content areas. 
  • Determine learning environments that will encourage learner exploration, discovery, and expression across content areas. 
  • Analyze ways to develop learners’ communication skills in disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. 

Week 6

  • Investigate professional development opportunities specific to content and areas that need improvement, as a means of improving pedagogical practice. 
  • Determine the role that professional and ethical standards play in the field of education. 
  • Defend the importance of collaboration, self-reflection, and professional development in improving practice.
