Course Description

SPAN/110 is an introductory course in conversational Spanish. The objective of the course is to teach students basic vocabulary and grammar with an emphasis on the meaningful use of the language and an introduction to Hispanic cultures. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to communicate effectively in Spanish, using basic words and phrases learned during the course.  Note to Students: Some of the required MySpanishLab exercises necessitate the use of a microphone. You will need access to a microphone.

This undergraduate course is 5 weeks.

Course Objectives

En la Universidad (At the University)

  • Memorize and recall Ch. 1 vocabulary.
  • Recognize and state greetings (formal and informal).
  • Differentiate between formal (usted) and informal (tú) register.
  • Describe oneself and others using the verbs ser and estar and new vocabulary in context.
  • Identify and discuss the use and agreement of gender and number of articles, nouns, and adjectives.
  • State and use the numbers from 0 to 100.
  • Compare and contrast cultural aspects.

Después de Clase (After School)

  • Memorize and recall Ch. 2 vocabulary.
  • Describe one’s schedule.
  • Identify and recall time and days of the week.
  • Explain and apply verb estar.
  • Describe daily activities using regular –AR verbs in the present tense.
  • Recognize and form questions using interrogative words.
  • Indicate location using prepositions.
  • Describe what one is going to do using the expression ir + a+ infinitive.
  • Compare and contrast cultural aspects.

En Familia (Family)

  • Memorize and recall Ch. 3 vocabulary.
  • Describe physical aspects and personality traits of each family member.
  • List one’s daily activities using –ER and –IR verbs in the present tense.
  • Explain and state possession and ownership using possessive adjectives.
  • Describe hobbies and other activities using pronouns after prepositions
  • Define oneself and others using the idiomatic expression with the verb tener.
  • Compare and contrast cultural aspects.

En Casa (At Home)

  • Memorize and recall Ch. 4 vocabulary.
  • Describe one’s home.
  • State and use the numbers higher than 100.
  • Compare people and objects using specific expressions.
  • Recognize and recall stem-changing verbs in the present tense while listing daily activities.
  • Identify and utilize adverbs when describing how to perform certain tasks.
  • Compare and contrast cultural aspects.

Los Fines de Semana (The Weekends)

  • Describe one’s daily routine using reflexive verbs.
  • State what one does for each other using reciprocal verbs.
  • List one’s clothing and describe it.
  • Identify demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.
  • Describe one’s intent to perform an action using reflexive verbs in the infinitive.
  • State what one is doing at the moment, using the present progressive.
  • Explain how months and date are used to schedule events.
  • Describe months, weather, and seasons.
  • Compare and contrast cultural aspects.
