Course Description

This course examines the characteristics and instruction of learners with physical and health disabilities including individuals with sensory, orthopedic, and other health impairment (OHI). Attention is given to federal and state regulations as they pertain to assessment, eligibility, and the provision of special education services within the schools. Service delivery options, curriculum and program models, and appropriate supports and accommodations will also be examined.

This graduate course is 6 weeks.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, West Virginia. Wisconsin, Wyoming, and individuals who reside outside the United States.

Course Objectives

Week 1

  • Analyze laws, regulations, and policies that affect individuals with physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Determine eligibility criteria for individuals with physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Explore critical issues in the lives of individuals with health and physical disabilities.

Week 2

  • Examine the medical characteristics and health care needs that may accompany students with physical and health-related disabilities. 
  • Investigate the possible etiologies of physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Determine the learning and behavior characteristics of students with physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Differentiate the types of cerebral palsy and correlating medical and therapeutic treatments currently available.

Week 3

  • Investigate specific considerations regarding educational planning and placement of individuals with physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Compare inclusive practices and self-contained placement for least restrictive environment options.
  • Evaluate assistive technologies and alternative communication devices.
  • Explore curricular options that may retain grade-level content.

Week 4

  • Compare instructional methods and practices for teaching students with physical and health-related disabilities.
  • Examine the use of task and situation analysis for teaching and assessing students.  
  • Investigate content-specific instructional adaptations that consider the needs of the student.
  • Construct a lesson plan using appropriate instructional strategies and adaptations.

Week 5

  • Examine learning environment modifications that promote student independence. 
  • Differentiate strategies for building self-advocacy and self-determination skills.
  • Investigate ways to assist students with overcoming social and employment barriers.

Week 6

  • Examine the domains of life skills important for successful transition.
  • Explore curriculum and transition education to support effective transition planning.
  • Investigate postsecondary options, community services, and resources for transitioning students.
