Course Description

This course is designed to introduce participants to the history, laws, and theories of education for English language learners. Participants identify effective instructional models and teaching practices appropriate for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Participants also develop content area lesson plans and assessments, including appropriate materials, technology tools, and resources for English language learners. Cultural diversity, language acquisition, differentiated instruction, and TESOL program models are also addressed.

This graduate course is 4 weeks.

Attendance and participation are mandatory in all university courses, and specific requirements may differ by course. If attendance requirements are not met, a student may be removed from the course. Please review the Course Attendance Policy in the Catalog for more information.

This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Effective 1/1/20, the University of Phoenix (UOPX) is no longer an approved TESOL program provider in the state of New Mexico. Individuals enrolling in UOPX TESOL courses will NOT satisfy course requirements for the NM TESOL endorsement. If you are located in a state other than New Mexico, please contact your Department of Education to determine if the TESOL courses will be accepted.

Course Objectives

History, Law, and Theory; Cultural Diversity

  • Summarize the historical and legal aspects of teaching English language learners.
  • Explain the educational theories and principles of teaching English language learners.
  • Examine the cultural, social, linguistic, and academic issues facing English language learners.
  • Describe the processes in the development of cultural identity.
  • Explain the role of culture in language minority students’ achievement.
  • Analyze the influence of cultural diversity on instructional programs.

Language Acquisition and Second Language Instructional Approaches

  • Describe the stages of language acquisition.
  • Explain the issues that impact language acquisition.
  • Differentiate between instructional approaches, methods, strategies, and techniques appropriate for English language learners.
  • Examine the grammatical, communicative, and cognitive approaches to differentiated instruction for English language learners.

Content Area Instruction and Assessment

  • Explain the purpose of using a thematic approach to teach English language learners in different content areas.
  • Apply instructional strategies and techniques in teaching English language learners across content areas, including appropriate technology tools and resources.
  • Analyze the types and purposes of assessment for English language learners.
  • Identify potential limitations in assessments and evaluations of English language learners.

TESOL Program Models

  • Compare TESOL program models.
  • Identify principles of effective TESOL programs.
  • Examine the sociopolitical foundations of TESOL programs.
  • Integrate appropriate technology into TESOL programs.
